New Ultra-Low Iron Silica Solves Ethyl Maltol Discoloration Issue Once and for All

Zhongqi (Guangdong) Silicon Materials Co., Ltd. has officially launched its innovative food-grade silica product, ZLSILW58BF.

Zhongqi (Guangdong) Silicon Materials Co., Ltd. has officially launched its innovative food-grade silica product, ZLSILW58BF. Adopting proprietary ultra-low iron production technology, this new material maintains iron content at approximately 50 ppm — far below the common industry standard of 500 ppm. It fundamentally addresses the long-standing discoloration problem that troubles manufacturers of compound sweeteners.
Ethyl maltol is a widely used flavor enhancer in the food industry for its excellent aroma-boosting performance. However, it is highly sensitive to iron ions. Thanks to the phenolic hydroxyl groups in its molecular structure, ethyl maltol tends to form purplish-red complexes through chemical reactions with ferric ions. Even trace amounts of iron will turn white products pink or deep red, ruining product appearance and reducing market competitiveness.
In the past, compound sweetener producers tried to mitigate this issue by replacing equipment or adjusting production parameters, yet these methods delivered limited results and brought extra costs. According to Zhongqi’s Technical Director, ZLSILW58BF targets the root cause of discoloration. Using semiconductor-grade raw material purification and full-ceramic production lines, we have achieved an ultra-low iron level in the final product. It stays completely stable when blended with high-concentration ethyl maltol with no discoloration at all.
This new silica shares identical physical and chemical properties with conventional food-grade silica. Clients can directly replace their existing materials without modifying current formulas or production workflows. Up to now, ZLSILW58BF has passed field tests by many well-known domestic compound sweetener manufacturers and earned widespread recognition.
