Anti-Caking Mechanism of Food-Grade Silicon Dioxide in Milk Powder: Adaptation Solution for Infant Formula with Domestic High-Purity Products

Food-grade silicon dioxide (CNS No. 02.004) is a core additive that solves the caking problem in milk powder production.

Food-grade silicon dioxide (CNS No. 02.004) is a core additive that solves the caking problem in milk powder production. Especially in the field of infant formula milk powder, its anti-caking performance and safety directly determine product quality. During storage, milk powder is prone to form crystal bridging due to moisture adsorption, leading to particle agglomeration. Food-grade silicon dioxide exerts its effect through a dual mechanism of "physical barrier + moisture adsorption": particles with a size of 5-50μm uniformly coat the surface of milk powder particles, forming an isolation film to cut off the adhesion path, and adsorb free moisture with a specific surface area of 200-400m²/g, increasing the looseness of milk powder by more than 30%.

Technological breakthroughs have been achieved in domestic high-purity products. Silicon dioxide produced by the precipitation process has a purity of 99.5% and a heavy metal (lead, arsenic) content of less than 0.001%, surpassing the standards of some international brands, and has passed the dual certification of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In response to the stringent requirements of infant formula milk powder, the addition amount of the product is controlled at 0.2%-0.5%, which can not only avoid caking during reconstitution but also comply with the safety limit of National Food Safety Standard GB 2760. It has been supplied in batches to leading domestic dairy enterprises, breaking the high-end monopoly of international brands such as Evonik.

The Company's advantages are reflected in customized adaptation: by adjusting the particle size distribution and pore structure, it has developed a special "low addition, high anti-caking" model adapted to formula systems with different whey protein contents. At the same time, it has established full-chain quality control from raw silica sand to finished products, and provides microbial test reports for each batch to ensure the food safety for infants.
