Core Differences Between Food-Grade and Industrial-Grade Silica Dioxide: A Complete Selection Guide

Food-grade and industrial-grade silica dioxide have essential differences in raw materials, production processes, purity standards and application scenarios. Correct material selection is the key to ensuring product quality and safety.

Food-grade and industrial-grade silica dioxide have essential differences in raw materials, production processes, purity standards and application scenarios. Correct material selection is the key to ensuring product quality and safety. The core disparities between the two mainly lie in the following dimensions:

Raw Materials & Production Processes

Food-grade silica dioxide is manufactured from high-purity quartz sand as the raw material, through processes of hydrochloric acid hydrolysis, ultrapure water rinsing and high-temperature dehydration to remove crystal water. The entire production is carried out in GMP-compliant workshops to eliminate contamination risks.

In contrast, industrial-grade silica dioxide is mostly produced by direct crushing of natural quartz sand or the precipitation method. Featuring a simple production process, it only costs 1/5 to 1/3 of food-grade silica dioxide.

Purity & Safety Standards

Food-grade silica dioxide has a purity of ≥99.5%, with the content of heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury) ≤1 ppm. It must pass food-grade certifications such as FDA, EFSA and China's GB 25576, ensuring absolute toxicological safety.

Industrial-grade silica dioxide has a purity of ≥98%, with no strict restrictions on heavy metal content. It only needs to comply with industrial product standards (e.g., China's HG/T 3061) and has no requirements for biological safety.

Application Scenarios

Food-grade silica dioxide is mainly used in human-contact fields such as food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, serving as an anti-caking agent, stabilizer, carrier and other functional additives.

Industrial-grade silica dioxide is applied in industrial fields including rubber, glass, coatings and construction, acting as a reinforcing agent, filler, adsorbent and so on.

Key Selection Guidelines

Select materials based on clear application scenario requirements:

  1. Food-grade silica dioxide must be adopted for all human-contact products, with the official Certificate of Analysis (COA) provided;
  2. Industrial-grade products can be selected for industrial production according to performance requirements to balance cost and application effects.

Strictly prohibit the use of industrial-grade silica dioxide in food and pharmaceutical fields to avoid potential health hazards.
