Summary of the Application of Pharmaceutical Silicon Dioxide in the Pharmaceutical Industry

As an important chemical raw material, silicon dioxide has a wide range of applications, covering snacks (anti-caking additives), construction (ceramic tiles, latex paints), transportation (rubber tires), daily necessities (silica white in toothpaste, which is a type of silicon dioxide), etc.

As an important chemical raw material, silicon dioxide has a wide range of applications, covering snacks (anti-caking additives), construction (ceramic tiles, latex paints), transportation (rubber tires), daily necessities (silica white in toothpaste, which is a type of silicon dioxide), etc. At present, it has been widely used in rubber, plastics, coatings, building materials, aerospace, electronics, papermaking, ceramics, medicine and other fields. In the pharmaceutical field, silicon dioxide (micronized silica gel) is mainly used as an excipient, with specific applications as follows:

3.1 Adsorbent

Most Chinese medicine extracts have the characteristics of being moist and hygroscopic, while micronized silica gel can adsorb moisture and promote fluidity. Therefore, it is suitable for use in drugs such as capsules, which can improve the hygroscopic problem of extracts and ensure drug stability.

3.2 Glidant

Pharmaceutical silicon dioxide is a white powder with high purity and good fluidity. As a new type of pharmaceutical preparation excipient, it can greatly improve the fluidity of granules and increase bulk density during tablet production, thereby increasing the hardness of the prepared tablets, shortening the disintegration time, and ultimately improving the drug dissolution rate.

3.3 Anti-adherent

On the one hand, its anti-adhesive effect can effectively prevent materials from adhering to the surface of punch heads during tableting, facilitating tablet ejection, preventing tablet splitting, and ensuring smooth tableting operations. On the other hand, when applied to gel plasters, it can endow gel plasters with advantages such as large drug-loading capacity, good transdermal effect, excellent skin compatibility, and no irritation.

3.4 Grinding Aid

As a grinding aid, pharmaceutical silicon dioxide can promote the crushing and refinement of raw drug materials, and can provide co-ground products with high porosity structure for rapid water penetration, facilitating the processing of raw drug materials.

3.5 Antistatic Agent

Pharmaceutical excipient silicon dioxide has a large number of hydrophilic groups on its surface. These groups can absorb moisture in the air on the surface of the powder coating to form an electrophilic film, or reduce the surface resistance through proton transfer, thereby exerting an antistatic effect and avoiding adverse effects of static electricity on drug production or storage.

3.6 Excipient for Sustained-Release Preparations

When the dosage of pharmaceutical excipient silicon dioxide is 0.2%, the prepared drug has the characteristics of slow drug release compared with traditional dosage forms such as tablets and capsules, and can maintain a long-term blood drug concentration in the body, which is more conducive to the sustained effect of the drug.
